overview
Tiberias is located on the shores of the Sea of Galilee and it is one of the main tourism towns in Israel.
The most visited sites are naturally the Sea of Galilee, the tombs of the sages, the hot springs and the new promenade and local markets.
The Old City is located about 200 meters from the shore with the New City located 200 meters above it.
The town offers vacationers about 8 km of clean and beautiful shoreline and over 30 hotels of a wide variety of standards.
You will be able to find summer vacation hotels, minimalist hostels, spa hotels, boutique hotels, apartment hotels and more.
Tiberias was declared a town when the State of Israel was established in 1948 and today about 41,000 residents live there. Tiberias has a rich history.
Two thousand years ago Herod built the town and called it Tiberias as a tribute to the Roman Caesar.
Archaeologists have discovered ancient bathing pools and basalt street columns.
The tomb of the Rambam is also located in the town and attracts many believers. Tiberias has always been a focal point for pilgrims who meticulously return year after year.
When you arrive in Tiberias we recommend visiting the many well-known tourism sites including the Tiberias Archaeological Park.
This park is spread over 120 dunams and includes the ancient remains of the town up to the eleventh century and the beginnings of Tiberias.
The Yigal Alon Promenade is the local promenade on which you can watch the interesting display 5 meters high which gives a visual expression to the Sea of Galilee’s water level.
Another site which is recommended is the Greek Monastery and the Leaning Tower.
The Monastery is at the end of the Promenade to the south and in its courtyard you will find a church constructed in 1862.
The Tiberias Hot Springs Park includes the remains of the Old City’s “hot springs” and there you will be able to enjoy the waters in one of more than 17 hot pools there. Many festivals take place in Tiberias annually such as the Tiberias Festival on the Water which takes place during Passover and the international Tiberias marathon which takes place in January.
At Succot (Tabernacles) there are many summer events for all the family.
For those interested in seeing scenery and hiking you will be able to leave the town on one of the varied hiking trails on the adjacent Mount Arbel.
Another interesting route is the Ophir Observation Point located about 450 meters above the Sea of Galilee and from there you can see Tiberias and the Sea of Galilee at its best.
A trip around the Sea of Galilee is ideal for all the family, and combines nature, scenery and history.
