Ramat Gan

overview

The garden town of Ramat Gan is located on the coastal plain and borders with Tel Aviv. On the north the town borders with the Yarkon River and in the south the open areas of the Safari and National Park. The visitor to the town will be able to visit the National Park and the biggest Safari in Israel, go shopping in one of many commercial centers, visit museums, theatres and various cultural centers and more.

Ramat Gan started out as an agricultural settlement close to its big sister Tel Aviv. It was established as a cooperative but this was not successful and therefore changed its character and became an urban settlement and in 1926 was recognized by the British Mandate as a regional council. In 1950 Ramat Gan was declared a town and simultaneously the town began to grow, the educational services were expanded and construction was started on the National Park as we know it today. A distressing event in the history of the town was a car accident in which the serving Mayor Avraham Karnitzky was killed, and thus his 43 years as Mayor of Ramat Gan came to a sudden end.

Some important sites in Ramat Gan are: The National Park, situated around a lake with many dunams of green lawns and cycling trails. The Safari is the largest zoo in Israel and it attracts thousands of visitors each year. It is very children-friendly and you can easily spend an entire day there looking at the hundreds of species of animals. The business center of Israel is the diamond bourse area. This is the largest diamond bourse in the world and it has been operating since 1968. The Bialik area is the main shopping street of Ramat Gan. You will find almost everything in this street: clothes and accessories, jewellery, electric items and more. You will also be able to see the impressive bronze statue of Bialik there. Visit the Israel Art Museum – this museum exhibits mostly artworks of sculpture, painting, design and photography. The Child Boulevard is a pleasant and tranquil boulevard which is well worth a visit. Are we hungry? In Ramat Gan there are many good restaurants with diverse styles, from expensive gourmet restaurants to simple and tasty workers restaurants.
The best idea is to have a quick snack of shawarma or falafel at one of the well known food stands in the town.
